This handmade version of An Experiment in Perspective was produced with the support of the Artist-in- Residence program at Light Work in Syracuse, NY. The entire book was printed onto archival inkjet, double-sided, cotton photo rag paper. The pages were trimmed, folded, sewn and bound by students at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. The hard cover and slipcase were both made with Cailux book cloth. The cover photograph is a selenium toned, silver gelatin print, produced at Digital Silver Imaging in Belmont, Massachusetts.
I just received a copy of Photographers’ Sketchbooks by Stephen McLaren and Bryan Formhals, published by Thames and Hudson. Thank you so much for including me in this book (in an eight page spread, no less) that describes the creative practice of nearly 50 photographers, with notables such as Roger Ballen, Saul Leiter, Louie Palu and Alec Soth. Thanks goes out too, to Jason Landry who made the great studio portrait!

Thanks again for your continued enthusiasm and support – you truly keep me going!
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I hope you had a great holiday. Am I alone in saying that I’m looking forward to the cold weather and the snow?
I want to make you aware of couple of events occurring imminently. First off, I’m very excited that my work will be on display at Art Miami at the Art Miami Pavilion starting Wednesday, November 30th with the Richard Levy Gallery. If you are in the area, please be sure to stop by booth #C15 and be sure to say Hi to Richard, Viviette and Alexandra.
My work will also be on display and on auction in New Orleans, LA at the PhotoGala Benefit Party and Live Auction held during PhotoNOLA, December 8-11, 2011, the 6th Annual Festival of Photography. PhotoNOLA seeks to enhance dialogue around the medium of photography and further develop New Orleans as a prime destination for photography collectors, enthusiasts and professionals in the field. I am one of 20 artists in the live auction that benefits the New Orleans Photo Alliance. NOPA have only been around since 2006 and already they have accomplished so much. It is our non profit photo galleries that help to keep the medium vital. This year, you do not need to attend the auction to place a bid. Please click here for more information and to place a bid to support this great institution and maybe get a print, one of my personal favorites!

Some people use oil paints to make a painting and others produce art using a computer. Both are valid forms of expression, but one is not the other.
For the first time since February 2008, when Polaroid announced that it would cease production of Type 55 film, Soundwave Research Laboratories, in Ashland Massachusetts, has been trying to produce a replacement. Now, after a long effort they have produced a small hand-made batch of film, that is very similar to Type 55. Bob Crowley has documented the projects progress in his blog called New 55.
As some of you know, the Polaroid version was a unique film that not only produced an instant positive, but also produced a high quality 4×5″ negative that could be scanned or printed using an enlarger. It was the very film that I used to shoot my Experiment in Perspective series.
I feel very honored to be the very first photographer outside of the New 55 organization to be able to try this film. I was given 5 sheets. The first one had a mechanical malfunction and the second was the image as shown, just shot this morning. My impressions are as follows:
This new film utilizes the same film holder that was used with Polaroid Type 55 and seems to have many of the same characteristics. While an actual product is perhaps, a ways off. I can tell you that what has been done by this organization to date is a major accomplishment. It is one thing to read a vague long-expired patent, quite another to duplicate the results on a lab bench.
Does anyone even give a damn about this? If you do, I ask that follow the New 55 Blog and spread the word. Please note: there is not a test supply currently available. Please do not ask Bob for samples.
I’m asking you to please pass this on to anyone that you think might care. If you still use film and feel threatened by its loss, please post this to your wall; tweet, it blog it, throw your window open and yell. If you need some inspiration, if you feel overpowered by the big corporations who tell you what you can and cannot have, look at this brief video clip, and tell Bob how you feel. maybe Bob will hear you in Ashland!
A review of my Wall Space Gallery exhibition appeared here.
I was interviewed by Aline Smithson in today’s edition of Lenscratch!
The rains have parted here in New England, I’m looking forward to a great summer, hope you are too. There is a lot going on in my world:
1) I’m very excited to announce that My Experiment in Perspective traveling exhibition opens in Santa Barbara, California today at Wall Space Gallery and runs through July 3rd. Wall Space Gallery also features the work of personal favorites, Tom Chambers, Joelle Jenson, Keith Johnson, Lydia Panas, Ken Rosenthal, Aline Smithson and Grace Weston. Please have a look – you’ll see that I’m in good company!
2) My new website went live last week with new work! Have a look here: www.chervinsky.org
3) I’ve embarked on a new project called Studio Physics. My previous work combined drawing and photography, this work combines painting and photography. I’ve enlisted the help of anonymous painters from China. You can see some of this work in progress on my new website and read about my reasons for making it.
4) I’ve signed up with the Ellen Miller Gallery on Newbury Street in Boston. The gallery also represents Lori Nix, David Maisel and Ion Zupcu. If you are unfamiliar with these great artists, please have a look on Ellen’s new website.
5) I’ve begun assembling my Experiment in Perspective series into a book. To the writers on my list: contact me if you would like to contribute.
